Taiwan business leaders talk economic partnerships at the site of the proposed Cairo port project

State Senator Dale Fowler, LEFT, and Johnson Chiang RIGHT, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office at Cairo's Magnolia Manor on Tuesday November 2, 2021.

Even before the first shovel hits the ground on the new Cairo Port project, the beginnings of a new economic partnership between Taiwan and Illinois has been established. Johnson Chiang, Director General with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, says trade between his country and the United States is already strong, and he looks forward to greater economic benefits once the new port is up and running.

"We are key trading partners with the US. So we share common values, common interests, so it's good to see that we have more opportunities to participate in infrastructure projects like Cairo, right here."

The consultant hired to design the shipping port says groundbreaking should happen a year from now, with operations beginning in late 2024
