The City of Carbondale was given a Recreational Trails Program Grant of $200,000 from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to build a multi-use trail around Cedar Lake.

The grant will assist with the construction of 7 miles of trail. Construction begins this summer and is expected to be completed by this fall. The city will also install ADA-accessible restrooms and a boat launch.

The trail will be open to hikers, backpackers, and mountain bikers. The project is the first step to a larger trail looping around Cedar Lake, the water source for Carbondale and other surrounding communities.
