State Senator Terri Bryant is throwing her support behind keeping the Ten Commandments monument on the courthouse lawn in Jefferson County.

The Murphysboro republican says the principles represented by this monument play a role in shaping the foundation of America's legal and civic institutions. They reflect a moral code centered on responsibility, fairness, and respect for others.

A group of local residents recently filed suit seeking to remove the nearly seven-foot-tall Ten Commandments monument.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, and the ACLU of Illinois assert the monument violates the Illinois Constitution’s protections for the separation of church and state.
