The Illinois Freedom Project has traveled around the state of Illinois.

The Illinois Freedom Project is coming to the African-American Museum of Southern Illinois in Carbondale.

The exhibit highlights the struggles of black Illinoisans from the French Colonial era up until the early 20th century.

Gabrielle Lyon, executive director of Illinois Humanities, said the importance of the exhibit goes beyond the state.

"Illinois has an extraordinary history that is really important to the national narrative, about what it's really taken to enable African-Americans to have basic rights, so it both brings up stories and sort of complicates ideas we maybe have about ourselves in Illinois," she said.

The exhibit opened on February 12th and will be in Carbondale until March 19th. This will be the final stop for the traveling exhibit, which is free to the public.
