As August unfolds, it’s time to recognize National Immunization Month, a crucial period for ensuring that you and your family are up to date on vaccinations. The Southern 7 Health Department (S7HD) is spearheading efforts to remind families about the importance of routine immunizations as students prepare to return to school. According to Shawnna Rhine, S7HD Community Outreach Coordinator, “While back-to-school preparations often focus on supplies and activities, keeping up with vaccinations should be a top priority for everyone.”
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a notable decline in routine immunizations, with vaccination rates for Kindergarteners dropping from 95% to 93%—the lowest in a decade. Despite improvements, many people remain behind on their scheduled shots. Vaccines are a critical defense against various serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, and maintaining up-to-date immunizations helps protect both individuals and communities.
Southern 7 Health Department offers all recommended vaccinations for all age groups at its seven public health clinic locations. This includes routine childhood vaccinations, as well as flu and COVID-19 shots. To encourage families to stay on track with their immunizations, S7HD is running its annual “Ice Cream for Vaccines” program. Children who receive their vaccines at S7HD will be given a coupon for a free ice cream cone from Dairy Queen restaurants in Anna and Vienna, while supplies last.
