SIU-Carbondale alumnus and civil rights icon Charles Neblett has been honored at the White House by President Obama and received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater.

Neblett was also an original member of the legendary Freedom Singers of the Civil Rights era. The group's main focus was to educate the black community about their basic freedoms, including the right to vote, and encourage the integration of "whites-only" territory.

WSIU's Brad Palmer talked with Neblett about his experiences from the past and now as he battles stage 4 prostate cancer.

As a news producer and news anchor on All Things Considered, Brad provides the listeners with a recap of the day's top local and state news as well as breaking news at any given time. Contact WSIU Radio at 618-453-6101 or email wsiunews@wsiu.org
