The Carbondale Police Department will be awarded a 362-thousand dollar grant this week from the Illinois Attorney General's Office to purchase cameras, license plate readers, and digital forensic technology to combat organized retail crime.

Carbondale is one of only five police departments in the state to receive the grant.

According to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, organized crime rings are often behind seemingly low-level retail crimes.
