BBB Warns: Protect Your Accounts by Safeguarding Six-Digit Verification Codes

Better Business Bureau

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is alerting consumers to the critical importance of protecting six-digit verification codes, a key element in two-factor authentication (2FA) used to secure online accounts. These codes offer an additional layer of security, ensuring that even if someone has your password, they cannot access your account without the verification code sent to your phone or email.

Scammers are increasingly targeting these codes, posing as representatives from trusted organizations such as banks or utility companies. They may claim there's an urgent issue with your account or pressure you into providing the code. However, the BBB stresses that legitimate companies will never ask for this information. Sharing these codes can lead to unauthorized access to your accounts, putting your personal and financial information at risk.

The BBB advises never to share verification codes with anyone, regardless of the circumstances. Use the code immediately upon receipt and delete it afterward. If someone requests your code, it’s likely a scam, and you should end the conversation and report the incident. Additionally, avoid sharing your phone number with strangers online to further protect your accounts. By staying vigilant and following these guidelines, you can help ensure your online security remains intact.
