Southern Illinois will have an impressive view of the planets of Venus and Mars this weekend. Venus is currently farther away from the Sun, and much closer to Mars. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, Venus will appear at its brightest this weekend with a -4.7 magnitude. In comparison, a full moon has a -13 magnitude.
For a closer look, Giant City State Park will host a night sky viewing event with the Astronomical Association of Southern Illinois. Join a Park Naturalist on Saturday night from 8 to 9:30pm for a very short evening hike to the viewing field. The AASI will have telescopes set up to enjoy the beautiful night sky and all that it has to offer.
This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Contact the Giant City Visitor Center to register at 618-457-4836.
