A hiker in Giant City State Park fell to her death Sunday morning.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department reports 37-year-old Ashley Stempien of Mt. Vernon, Alabama was sightseeing along with 31-year-old Carlos Riddle of Daphne, Alabama at the top of Devil's Standtable Trail and fell approximately 55 feet to the ground.

Riddle called 911 and made it to the base of the cliff to find Stempien with severe injuries from the fall.

Stempien was taken to a nearby medivac helicopter from Arch Air Medical Service. She died during the flight to a St. Louis area hospital.
