Congresswoman Mary Miller of Illinois and Senators Jim Banks and Tom Cotton have introduced the Empower Parents to Protect Their Kids Act.
The bill prohibits K-12 schools from supporting or concealing a student’s adoption of an identity different from their biological sex without parental consent. It also gives parents the right to sue districts that withhold such information. Supporters say the measure ensures families—not schools—remain in charge of children’s upbringing. The proposal follows a Trump executive order on parental rights and is backed by groups like the Family Research Council and Parents Defending Education.
Several House and Senate Republicans are co-sponsoring the bill.
