An Amtrak train and a tractor trailer collide north of Carbondale

A southbound Amtrak train hit a tractor trailer Wednesday afternoon just before 2 p.m. on the Burris Road at Helm Road crossing north of Carbondale.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department reports evidence indicated the semi was headed west on Helm Road crossing the railroad tracks when the train collided with it.

The driver of the truck suffered serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital. His name is being withheld at this time.

There were no injuries reported to the operator or the passengers on the train.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the incident.

Other law enforcement agencies that responded to the scene included the DeSoto Police Department, Carbondale Township Fire Department, Carbondale Fire Department and the Jackson County Ambulance Service.
