In a recent statement, the Illinois Sheriffs' Association is calling on all residents to stand united against violence as the 2024 election season intensifies. The association, representing the state's law enforcement leaders, underscores the importance of maintaining peace and respect in the face of political disagreements. Citing a recent assassination attempt on a political candidate that resulted in one death and another person critically injured, the sheriffs are raising alarms about the dangers of escalating violence.

The association stresses that the strength of the United States lies in its democratic principles, where differing opinions are met with tolerance and understanding, not aggression. They warn that using violence to influence political outcomes or undermine constitutional processes is not only unacceptable but threatens the very fabric of the nation’s democratic system.

The Illinois Sheriffs' Association calls on citizens to engage in constructive dialogue, listen to opposing views, and uphold the democratic values that have historically united the country. As chief law enforcement officers, they reaffirm their commitment to protecting these values and urge all Illinoisans to reject violence in any form. The sheriffs' message is clear: in these polarized times, the path forward is through unity, respect, and peaceful discourse, not through violence and division.
