Jackson County will have a new state's attorney.

The Jackson County Clerk's office reports Democrat challenger Marsha Cascio-Hale has officially defeated Republican incumbent Joe Cervantez in a race decided this week by mail-in, military and provisional ballots postmarked by Election Day.

On Election Day, both Cascio-Hale and Cervantez received 10,805 votes. But Cascio-Hale received an additional 106 mail-in, military and provisional votes to 67 for Cervantez, meaning Cascio-Hale wins the race by 39 votes.

Cascio-Hale will become the first woman to serve as Jackson County State’s Attorney. In 2022, she was appointed as the first woman to become Williamson County State's Attorney after the resignation of Brandon Zanotti.

Since 2023, she had been practicing as a private attorney with the Southern Illinois Law Center.

Cervantez had served as Jackson State's Attorney since 2020.
