A group of southern Illinois lawmakers is calling on the Illinois Department of Corrections to temporarily suspend mail processing services within correctional facilities.

State Senators Dale Fowler and Terri Bryant, along with Representatives Patrick Windhorst, Paul Jacobs, Dave Severin and David Friess say this in response to numerous reports from constituents about exposure to drugs and other unknown substances in prison facilities across the state.

They say this suspension should remain in effect until proper protocols and resources are implemented to prevent future exposure incidences.

The southern Illinois delegation of lawmakers came together to request that IDOC make the temporary changes to mail protocol via a joint letter sent on Monday.
