ON THIS DAY in 1908 Ford Motor Company builds its first Model T car, which Henry Ford himself tests on a hunting trip to Wisconsin and Northern Michigan.

The South District Elks Lodges is hosting a Free children’s orthopedic assessment clinic on Friday August 22 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin and is by appointment only. To make an appointment call the Illinois Elks Children’s Care office at 800-272-0074 between the hours of 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. There are no charges for any services at this clinic. No medical referral is necessary for the clinic. The clinic is an ideal time to have a child reviewed for bone and joint development.

Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement will be taking a day trip by bus to visit French historical sites along the Mississippi on Thursday, October 16. Registration is open now and will close August 28. The trip includes a visit to Baetje (BAY-gee) Farms in Bloomsdale, Missouri, for a tour of the creamery and cheese tasting. There will be a stop at The Kozy in Bloomsdale for brunch. Also visit the Old Cahokia Courthouse, Holy Family Log Church, Jarrot Mansion & more. The bus will follow the Kaskaskia Trace, the oldest road in Illinois, and pass through Prairie du Rocher, Illinois’ second-oldest town, established by French colonists in 1722. Final stops are at Fort des Chartres (1718), part of a chain of French forts, and the Modoc Rock Shelter National Historic Site. The non-refundable cost is $119, including brunch. The chartered bus will leave the Banterra Center parking lot at 8:00 am, returning about 6:30 pm. Call SIU Events and Outreach at 618-536-7751 to reserve your seat by August 28th.
