ON THIS DAY in 1926 First televised weather map is broadcast for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington, DC.
On, Confluence Books in Carbondale will host author Mike Shepherd who will read from his two books related to his experiences in Vietnam and at SIU. Sunday, August 24, starting at 2 pm
Shepherd served as a radio reporter for 7th Air Force Information in South Vietnam starting in 1967. He interviewed airmen and soldiers from the DMZ to the Mekong Delta. After being discharged, he attended SIU Carbondale. The 1969-1970 academic year ended early, closed in response to mass protests, sparked by the May 4 Kent State killing of four students. But the protests were also fueled by, among other things, the anger over the new, AID-funded Center for Vietnamese Studies and Programs. This history is reflected in Shepherd’s two books, the first a historical fiction, Like Another Lifetime in Another World, and the second, Days of Rage, a collection of stories, prose, and poems, both fiction and nonfiction. The author will read from his books, answer questions, and have copies available for sale and signing. Parking is available off Forest Avenue.
