Confluence Books in Carbondale will host author Mike Shepherd on Sunday, August 24, at 2 p.m. for a reading and discussion of his two books inspired by his time in Vietnam and at Southern Illinois University.
Shepherd served as a radio reporter for the 7th Air Force Information in South Vietnam starting in 1967, interviewing airmen and soldiers from the DMZ to the Mekong Delta. After his discharge, he attended SIU Carbondale during the turbulent 1969–1970 academic year, which ended early due to mass protests following the Kent State shootings.
His works — Like Another Lifetime in Another World and Days of Rage — blend historical fiction with stories, prose, and poetry drawn from his personal experiences. Attendees can hear excerpts, ask questions, and purchase signed copies.
