The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is inviting hunters and the public to a moist soil habitat field day at Carlyle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area on Saturday, September 20. Wildlife biologists and staff will lead tours at 10 a.m., 11:30, and 1 p.m., showing how moist soil management supports ducks and improves habitat. The approach mimics natural wet and dry cycles to boost seed-producing wetland plants. Each session is limited to 35 people and requires advance online registration. Visitors should meet at Hunter Parking Lot 1, south of the site headquarters in Vandalia. Registration can be done online at the following IDNR Eventbrite Links.
Celebrate the fall equinox as the Southern Illinois Pagan Alliance celebrates Mabon, Sunday, Sept. 21 starting at 2 p.m. at Shelter 2 at Giant City State Park.
Mabon is the second of three harvest festivals and the time when day and night are equal in length. This time of year encourages pagans to reap what they sow, both literally and figuratively. Gathering begins at 12 p.m. noon. The ritual begins at 2 p.m. A potluck will follow. All ages are welcome. Ample free parking is available at Shelter 2. Carpooling is encouraged. Please bring a friend. Well-behaved pets are welcome. Take Route 13 to Giant City Road (away from Walmart) and keep going until you get into the park. Turn left at the first stop sign and follow the road past Giant City Lodge. Shelter 2 will be the second shelter on your left. Look for the SIPA signs. There is a small parking lot close to Shelter 2. More free parking is available north of Shelter 2. For more information, contact Tara Nelsen at 618-924-0623 (text preferred) or Andi Darnell on the SIPA Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/sipagan1998
