SIU students will have the chance to compete in a unique scavenger hunt across the Carbondale campus on October 29th.
The Tree Campus Higher Education Committee and the Forestry Department are putting together an arboretum scavenger hunt to help students learn more about nature.
Students will find and label different items on the list like a twig with buds or leaves with certain shapes or characteristics.
Superintendent of Grounds Dave Tippy says students won’t have to go hiking through heavily wooded areas to participate.
“Most part, I would say no, I mean, it'll be in in, you know, in our academic campus confines. You don't think you're going to have to get too deep into the woods? Most of these trees would be available from the lawn area or sidewalk roadway, something along those lines.”
The scavenger hunt was created to replace the annual tree walk to fulfill the service-learning requirement to maintain the universities recognition of Tree Campus status.
