Panelists will discuss why local news is important to southern Illinois

An event on Thursday, April 24 in Carbondale will highlight the collaboration of non-profit newsrooms and universities as they try to rebuild community-centered reporting in rural areas throughout Illinois.

The event will feature a panel discussion of professional journalists from Capitol News Illinois, ProPublica, the Illinois Answers Project, Northwestern University’s Medill Illinois News Bureau and SIU-Carbondale.

WSIU's Brad Palmer previewed the event with two of the panelists, Jeff Rogers, executive director of the Illinois Press Foundation and Capitol News Illinois, and Jan Thompson, the director of the SIU-Carbondale School of Journalism and Advertising.

The event is Thursday evening at the Varsity Center in Carbondale. Doors open at 5 p.m. Guests can enjoy lights refreshments and mingle with reporters and editors. The panel discussion begins at 6.
