There will be a free public lecture on the discovery of a fossilized coal forest that is buried under Southern Illinois and Indiana.
Scott Elrick, associate geologist for the Illinois State Geological Survey, will describe the 300-million-year-old fossilized forest, which was found along the Galatia channel, an ancient river that flowed across southern Illinois. Elrick will describe the geology surrounding the underground discovery and the geological and climatic factors that led to the remarkable preservation of this fossil forest.
The lecture will take place at the auditorium of the Life Science III building at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on April 18th at 7 pm.
