A southern Illinois CPA has pleaded guilty to federal fraud and money laundering charges.
The U-S Attorney’s Office says 53-year old Kevin Williams of Mt. Carmel entered a guilty plea Wednesday. He was accused of stealing more than two-million dollars from an elderly client.
A Grand Jury indicted Williams in January. The indictment alleged Williams befriended an elderly Mt Carmel woman and then exerted his influence over her investments and income. Williams admitted in court that he engaged in a complex scheme to defraud the victim by stealing her money while she was alive and altering her will so that he would inherit more of her money upon her death.
Williams also admitted that he converted the victim’s money for his personal gain through a series of false financial transactions. As part of his plea agreement Williams must make full restitution to the victim as well as the IRS and the State of Illinois. Sentencing is scheduled for September 26th. Williams faces up to a total of 40-years in prison.
Kevin Williams is a long–time member of the Mt. Carmel community and is a former school board member of the Wabash Community Unit School District and the Illinois Eastern Community Colleges Board.
