Ruling in Murray Lawsuit Could Come in March

State of IL

A federal judge could rule in March on a lawsuit aimed at preventing the closure of Murray Developmental Center in Centralia.

Testimony in the case wrapped up Thursday in Chicago.   Advocates who are trying to block the closure of the center brought the suit. The state wants to close the facility to save money and have more community-based care for people with disabilities.

Thursday, lawyers for the Murray Parent Association argued Murray's 250 residents have severe disabilities that only an institution can handle.  They dispute the state's claim that community care would save Illinois nearly $120,000 per year, per resident. But, lawyers for the state say the litigation is being fueled by employees who are worried about losing their jobs as well as guardians who aren't open-minded about alternative living options.

The state wants to close the facility as part of a strategy to save money and have more community-based care for people with disabilities. Settlement meetings have been held, but no agreement has been reached.
