Treasurer Michael Frerichs says everyone should check the I-Cash portal

The Illinois Treasurer's Office is hoping to spur more southern Illinoisans to check for unclaimed property.

The I-Cash program links unclaimed property with its owners and beneficiaries - and more than $47 million has been identified in southern Illinois that's owed to owners, their families, and organizations.

Treasurer Michael Frerichs says in Jackson County alone, more than 100,000 unclaimed properties have a total worth of more than $13 million. Williamson County's worth is nearly $9 million.

The state returned more than $1.6 billion in unclaimed property last year.
