Sen. Bryant says the resignation of the DCFS director should lead to systematic changes in the agency

The director of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is stepping down.

State Senator Terri Bryant from Murphysboro says Marc Smith's announcement is long overdue.

She says now it's time to work on fixing the systematic problems within the agency that fails to care for and protect the state's most vulnerable children and families.

The most recent audit found DCFS investigators were in some cases more than 2 years late in reporting suspected sexual abuse of hospitalized children.

And DCFS has two months to document whether abuse and neglect are likely in every report it receives – but due to clerical errors that hasn’t happened since at least 1998.
