Illinois Senator Dick Durbin spoke on the Senate floor regarding the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. He called for a ceasefire from the Israeli Government, pointing out the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
He said, "While Israel has every right to defend itself, the humanitarian toll inflicted on the people of Gaza has been of historic magnitude and increasingly becomes counter-productive to Israel's long-term security."
Senator Durbin warned Israel about repeating the mistakes of the U.S. after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Durbin called on both Hamas and Israel to stand down on military actions surrounding Gaza's hospitals, and emphasized that any U.S. military assistance to Israel must follow International agreements of war. He concluded his speech by calling for a two-state solution.
