The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved more than $327,000 for new rail safety equipment at the Mine Road crossing near Hurst in Jackson County.

The project will add automatic flashing light signals, gates, and constant warning circuitry. The state’s Grade Crossing Protection Fund will cover 95% of the costs — about $311,000 — while Union Pacific Railroad will pay the rest and handle future maintenance. All work must be finished within 18 months.

ICC officials say the upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to make crossings safer for drivers and pedestrians across Illinois.
