Illinois Poison Center Urges Pool Safety as Summer Kicks Off

As summer begins and families head to pools and water parks, the Illinois Poison Center (IPC) is warning the public about the hidden dangers of recreational water and pool chemicals.

According to IPC Medical Director Dr. Michael Wahl, recreational water illnesses (RWIs) like diarrhea, skin infections, and respiratory issues can be caused by germs in the water—even in properly treated pools. Parasites like Cryptosporidium can survive in chlorinated water for up to 10 days and cause symptoms that last for weeks.

To stay safe, IPC recommends avoiding swimming when ill, showering before entering the pool, not swallowing pool water, and regularly checking children’s diapers.

Pool owners are also advised to handle chemicals with care. Improper use of chlorine can lead to skin irritation, respiratory problems, and dangerous chemical reactions.

IPC manages more than 200 cases of pool chemical exposure annually. For any concerns, their free and confidential 24-hour helpline is available at 1-800-222-1222.
