With the NFL season about to kick off, Illinois’ new per-wager sports betting tax is drawing fire from the Sports Betting Alliance.
The group warns the tax—first of its kind in the nation—hits small, recreational bettors hardest and could push more people toward illegal online markets. Officials say over half of bets in Illinois are five dollars or less, making the surcharge especially costly for casual players. Several legal sportsbooks have already added new fees or minimum bet requirements to cover the tax.
Consumer advocates warn illegal gambling platforms expose residents to scams, fraud, and addictive gambling without oversight.
