To deal with rising costs in the current climate for air transportation, Cape Air is entering into a re-bidding process for essential air service at Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois.

Cape Air's original four-year deal was set to expire in 2023.

Veterans Airport manager Doug Kimmel says the airline made the move now to deal with growing concerns over the availability of planes and pilots.

Kimmel says once the 90-day re-bidding process is complete in January, the airport and the local communities can weigh in on which provider offers the best service and forward that input to the U.S. Department of Transportion.

He says this process will not change Cape Air's current schedule, flights or fares.
