Carbondale police officers responded to the area of Chili's Grill and Bar at 1240 East Main Street last night (Tuesday) at 6:30pm regarding reports of shots fired.

Officers learned a robbery occurred in the parking lot of a nearby business which led the victim's friends to chase the suspect into and out of businesses in the 1200 block of East Main. The suspect was then chased into the parking lot near Chili's where the victim fired a handgun at the suspect.

No one was injured during the incident. Officers say that Juan M. Rivera, 30 years old of Carbondale, was charged with Assault, Aggravated Robbery, and Aggravated Battery. The robbery victim who fired the gun is not facing charges at this time as the Jackson County State’s Attorney reviews the case for further potential charges. Rivera was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail. The investigation is active and ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the City of Carbondale Police Department or Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (618) 549-COPS.
