Carbondale Man Arrested in Mother's Death

Carbondale Police have arrested a suspect in a March 2024 murder.

Following months of investigation, William L. Walters, age 65 of Carbondale was arrested on December 13th on a Jackson County warrant for the murder of his mother, 85-year-old Shelby Winfield of Carbondale.

Winfield was found unresponsive on March 19th in the 100 block of South Hewitt Street in Carbondale.

CPD and the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, continued to investigate the circumstances of Winfield’s death, leading to the arrest warrant . Walters was located and arrested in the 100 block of North Tower Road the same day the warrant was issued.

The arrest was conducted without incident and Walters is incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail on two counts of first degree murder pending a detention hearing.
