SIU-Carbondale has released its Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.

Crime statistics collected from 2022 to 2024 show the biggest problems in terms of sheer numbers are alcohol and drug violations.

There were 81 liquor law violations that led to arrests in 2024, more than double the combined total in 2022 and 2023. There were 17 drug arrests in 2024, compared to 10 total the previous 2 years.

There were 39 reports of dating violence during the 3-year period.

The number of rapes reported went up each year for a total of 15. All but one occurred in student housing.

The number of burglaries, aggravated assaults and motor vehicle thefts fluctuated from year to year.

There were no hate crimes reported in 2022 or 2023. There was one report of intimidation in 2024.

The Department of Education provides an online tool to help with comparing university crime numbers.

WSIU's Brad Palmer talked about the numbers with SIU Chief of Police Benjamin Newman.
