Pickleball, a fun sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has seen a massive surge in popularity in recent years. It's accessible, easy to learn, and encourages social interaction, making it a hit among people of all ages and skill levels.
September 13th & 14th, the SIU Rec Center is hosting the Saluki Open Pickleball Tournament on the SIU Campus.
Tournament director Olinda McKaughn and SIU Rec Center Director Corné Prozesky organize the tournament each year and are thrilled by the growth of the sport.
McKaughn says the popularity of the sport has increased at the social level but fans of the sport are getting more competitive and adds, "Now we've got that extra push of people wanting to play at a higher level or a competitive level and perhaps hope move into those professional ranks."
Don't be discouraged, however. The tournament is designed to allow all levels of experience and draws local players as well as players from several Midwest states.
Prozesky points out that the local popularity of Pickleball has supported growth on the SIU campus. He excitedly explains, "We have evolved to over 10 outdoor courts at SIU as well as 3 permanent indoor courts. It's just continuous growth. It's so much fun we have added an hour of lighting so the lights stay in until 11pm now."
The directors encourage all levels to enter the tournament, and spectators are welcome to attend for free.
The Saluki Open is September 13th & 14th at the SIU Multi Sport Courts beside Saluki Football Stadium.
