Springfield, IL – Illinois judges will now have to undergo a mandatory performance evaluation as part of new rules being implemented by the Chief Justice.
Local judges in Illinois will have to be more accountable for their performance, under rules announced by Supreme Court Chief Justice Tom Fitzgerald. The main item in the "Judicial Performance and Accountability Strategies" is a confidential evaluation of all judges each term. This evaluation had been optional but will now be mandatory.
State Supreme Court spokesman Joe Tybor says the strategies were developed in a two-year process that included input from the chief judges of the state's 23 circuits.
The initiatives are effective immediately.
