A missing person's case in Cape Girardeau County has now transitioned into a murder investigation.

The Cape County Sheriff's Department reports Jessi Wilfong was reported missing by her mother on May 25.

From the evidence collected from a search warrant at a residence in Cape County on June 15 and other information gathered, detectives suspected foul play was involved in Wilfong's disappearance.

On June 18, Wilfong's remains were found at a nearby location, which had a recently dug portion of ground inside of a barn.

On June 20, an autopsy performed on her body indicated the cause of death was a homicide.

Wednesday, the Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorneys' office filed charges against Teresa Baumgartner for Tampering with Physical Evidence in a Felony Investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are anticipated against one or more suspects.
