Unemployment rates and jobs were up in southern Illinois in December

Unemployment rates were up throughout southern Illinois from December 2022 to December 2023.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports the rate went up from 3.5 to 4.2 percent in the Carbondale-Marion metro area.

The highest unemployment rate belongs to Pulaski County at 7.3 percent. The lowest is an even 3 percent in Wabash County.

Total non-farm payrolls in the metro area increased by 400 jobs in December 2023 compared to a year ago.

Employment rose in Leisure and Hospitality, Government, Educational and Health Services, Construction, Financial Activities and Natural Resources and Mining.

Employment declined in Construction, Manufacturing and Professional and Business Services.
