Unemployment rates and jobs were up in southern Illinois in January

The unemployment rate increased in all 14 metropolitan areas in Illinois from January 2023 to January of this year.

The Carbondale-Marion metro area saw its rate increase from 4.6 percent to 5.1 percent.

Alexander, Johnson and Pope counties were the only areas in the region to see their unemployment rates decrease.

Pulaski has the highest rate at 7.6 percent. Wabash County has the lowest at 3.4 percent.

Total non-farm jobs increased in the Carbondale-Marion metro area by 800 year over year in January...300 of those jobs occurred in the government sector.

Manufacturing and leisure-hospitality saw some of the largest job declines.
