Over-the-year, total non-farm jobs increased in ten metropolitan areas and decreased in four for the year ending May.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the total non-farm jobs in the Carbondale-Marion metro area increased by 700 during this time period.
Employment went up among Government, Natural Resources-Mining, Leisure-Hospitality and Information sector employers.
Payrolls declined among employers in Construction, Private Education-Health Services, Trade-Transportation-Utilities, Financial Activities and Manufacturing.
Year to year, the unemployment rate went up in the Carbondale-Marion metro area in May from 4.2 to 4.6 percent.
Gallatin and Edwards counties were the only ones to see their unemployment rates decline.
The highest rate belongs to Pulaski County at eight percent. Wabash County had the lowest rate at 3.7 percent.
