SIU Press author, Carol Pirtle, will talk about her research and book about a 19th century Sparta, IL farmer who participated in the Underground Railroad.
Carbondale "At the Table" Dinner & Dialogue Series
The City of Carbondale, Southern Illinois Collaborative Kitchen, and the Carbondale Branch of the NAACP invite members of the community to attend the Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue series on Tuesday, May 21st 2024, at the Carbondale Civic Center.

The Carbondale Branch of the NAACP and the City of Carbondale will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Brown v. the Board of Education, a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to establish racial segregation in public schools as unconstitutional. The Carbondale Branch of the NAACP will present a reenactment, “Brown @ 70: Celebrating the Past, Shaping the Future” to kick off the evening. Following the reenactment, attendees will discuss the impact of this landmark decision and equity within educational systems.

The Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series will occur on the third Tuesday of the month through June. The Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series brings an intersection of topics ranging from culture, racism, history, and racial healing to the table through facilitated conversations so that community members from diverse backgrounds can engage in dialogue while enjoying a community meal.

This event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 5pm and the Dinner & Dialogue will begin around 5:30pm. Seating is limited and registration is required. For more information, please contact Dianah McGreehan at dmcgreehan@explorecarbondale.com or call 618-457-3282.

The “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series is supported by Healing Illinois. Healing Illinois is a racial healing initiative of the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) in partnership with The Field Foundation of Illinois and the Southern Illinois Community Foundation.
Christmas in July Trivia Night
Angels' Cove is a residential maternity home that provides hope to expectant mothers by providing a stable living environment, education classes, and other supportive services. Angels' Cove is a program of the Baptist Children's Home and Family Services. We will be hosting a Christmas in July Trivia Night to raise funds to be able to continue to help and support expectant mothers. Teams will consists of up to 8 players and the cost is $20 per player. There will also be a silent auction and food will be available during the evening. Decorate your teams table to win a special prize. The Last Five Years
13Theatrics presents "The Last Five Years" by Jason Robert Brown. This live stage musical explores the five year relationship of novelist Jamie and struggling actress Cathy. The show features local artists Braden Cummins as 'Jamie' and Lauren Hickle as 'Cathy' along with a live band.
Performances run May 17 & 18 at 7:30pm and May 19 at 2:00pm at the Varsity Center. Ticket available in advance via the Varsity Center's website or at the door before each show.

Public Astronomy Observation at SIUC
Sunday, May 5, 9 pm - 10:30pm

Free public astronomy observation at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale, School of Physics and Applied Physics Astronomy Observation Deck, located on the roof of the Neckers building. Join SIU Physics and the Astronomical Association of Southern Illinois for an evening of guided telescopic observations of the night sky.

Visible this evening: Several deep sky objects including the brightest globular cluster in our night sky, M13, the Hercules cluster. These objects are all fairly faint and highly dependant on good weather conditions.

Children accompanied by adults are welcome. Dress weather appropriate for this outdoor viewing. Please note that the observation deck is not handicap accessible and is only accessible via stairs. Note that while this is an outdoor activity, you may be in close proximity to people throughout the evening. Masks for this event are optional.
