The City of Carbondale will present what it calls a fun family-friendly event this weekend celebrating the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play Major League Baseball, marking the end of racial segregation in professional baseball.
Carbondale Game Changers is part of the Freedom to Freedom Juneteenth Celebration Series.
Organizers say the event will educate local youth on the history of America’s national pastime and the influence Jackie Robinson had on the sport. It will encourage youth and their family members to dream boldly to become “game changers” and make a positive difference in the community.
As part of the event this Sunday at MTN Dew Park in Marion, the Thrillville Thrillbillies will take on the Danville Dans at 3:30. The presentation will precede the game at 2:30.
Carbondale Game Changers is supported by Healing Illinois, a racial healing initiative of the Illinois Department of Human Services in partnership with The Field Foundation of Illinois and the Southern Illinois Community Foundation.
