Southern Illinois Healthcare is responding to a report that listed SIH Harrisburg Medical Center as at risk of closing due to cuts in Medicaid in the federal budget plan.
SIH says the recent speculation regarding the hospital’s status stems from a University of North Carolina study that identified the hospital as one of nine in Illinois at risk of closure. Officials say they understand the concern this may cause, but they stress SIH Harrisburg Medical Center remains a vital part of the SIH health system.
That said, SIH says it is disappointed in the recent passage of the federal “One Big Beautiful Bill” and is actively assessing how its provisions—particularly cuts to Medicaid—may impact its operations.
SIH says it will continue to stay in touch with the region's federal elected officials to help mitigate the potential burdens placed on rural healthcare providers.
