In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Deaconess Illinois is proud to announce the launch of Breast Check Friday, a region-wide initiative designed to make breast cancer screenings more accessible, supportive and even fun for women over the age of 40 in Southern Illinois.

Beginning Friday, October 3, women can walk in for a 3D mammogramโ€”no appointment, no doctor's order neededโ€”at any of the following Deaconess Illinois locations:

  • Deaconess Illinois Crossroads (Mt. Vernon, IL)
  • Deaconess Illinois Medical Center (Marion, IL)
  • Deaconess Illinois Union County (Anna, IL)

Breast Check Fridays will be held on the first four Fridays in October, with each week featuring a unique, themed activity to raise awareness and create a supportive experience for patients while they wait.

โ€œWe know early detection saves lives, but many women delay or avoid mammograms due to inconvenience or anxiety,โ€ said Katie Warren, MHA, RT(R)(CT)(ARRT), Illinois Regional Director of Radiology. โ€œBreast Check Fridays are about creating a welcoming environment where women feel supported, informed and empowered to take control of their health.โ€

Paula Dodillet, RT(R)(CT)(ARRT), Imaging Director, added: โ€œWeโ€™re meeting women where they areโ€”physically and emotionally. Whether itโ€™s cookies or conversation, these simple moments can turn a routine screening into something meaningful and memorable.โ€

October Themes & Activities

  • October 3 โ€“ Cookies for Courage: Decorate pink cookies in honor of breast cancer survivors and fighters.
  • October 10 โ€“ Bracelets of Strength: Create friendship bracelets with encouraging words to spread awareness.
  • October 17 โ€“ Lyrics of Love: Write uplifting lyrics and quotes on heart-shaped notes to add to our community breast cancer mural.
  • October 24 โ€“ Bejeweled Pumpkins: Decorate mini pumpkins with glitter and gems.

This initiative is aimed at women aged 40 and older who are due for a routine mammogram. By offering walk-in screenings with no order required, Deaconess Illinois is reducing barriers to careโ€”and making screenings something to look forward to.
