Illinois Provides Over 85.6 Million Meals Through Child and Adult Care Food Program

In fiscal year 2024, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) announced that more than 85.6 million meals and snacks were served to children across the state through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

This federal program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by ISBE, ensures that children in participating child care centers, after-school programs, day care homes, and emergency shelters receive nutritious meals at no cost to families.

Beginning October 1, CACFP sponsors can renew their applications for the upcoming fiscal year.

The USDA’s annually updated income eligibility guidelines will help determine which families qualify for reimbursements to support these essential meals.

Families are encouraged to check if their child care providers participate in the program.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders emphasized the importance of proper nutrition for children's growth and development, noting that CACFP plays a critical role in ensuring children have access to healthy meals regardless of their financial situation.

In addition to children, CACFP also provides meal reimbursements for adults aged 60 and older, as well as adults with disabilities enrolled in day care programs.

This aspect of the program is administered by the Illinois Department of Aging, further broadening its positive impact on communities across the state.
