Two Illinois Lawmakers Call for Changes to Fracking Rules
Two Illinois lawmakers are calling for changes in fracking practices in Illinois.
Representatives Scott Drury and Will Guzzardi are sponsoring legislation that would either make fracking laws more transparent or banning the practice altogether.
Jessica Foullion with Food and Water watch says this comes at the right time.
"We are at a really important point. There are not currently any permits that are approved for high volume fracturing in Illinois and I think it's time we make these necessary changes."
She says that over the years, records showing who owns the minerals beneath properties leave a lot of questions.
"In a lot of cases, record keeping on the ownership of these mineral rights is messy, it is lost."
Foullion says while the drilling goes down vertically at the point of entry, it branches out horizontally and could cross property lines.
