West Nile virus detected in mosquitoes near Pinckneyville

Routine testing has identified the first batch of mosquitoes to test positive for West Nile virus this year in Perry County.

The mosquitoes were collected on July 18 near Pinckneyville.

39 Illinois counties have now reported positive tests of the virus in humans, birds and mosquitoes.

Alexander, Hardin, Johnson and Massac counties have also reported positive tests in mosquitoes.

A dead bird in Pulaski County tested positive for West Nile last week.

The first human case was reported last week in an individual is in their 60’s who lives in suburban Cook County.
