Illinois’ senior US Senator says a key priority for 2023 must be continued support for Ukraine, as the Russian invasion continues.

Even before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s surprise visit to Washington last week, Senator Dick Durbin was urging colleagues on Capitol Hill to remember the embattled country as negotiations on a budget continued.

The Illinois Democrat, speaking on the floor of the US Senate, applauded continued work by NATO allies to put pressure on Russian leaders, as well.

Zelenskyy's visit drew high praise from both Durbin and Senator Tammy Duckworth, as well as members of Illinois' Congressional Delegation in the House. Durbin says financial support and other help from the US is giving Ukrainians a fighting chance at retaking what is theirs.

Durbin says he intends to continue his support in 2023 - and hopes for peace in the region sooner rather than later.
