Neighborhood leaders recently called for additional patrols

A week after the Arbor District Neighborhood Association met with Carbondale city officials about an increase in violence in its area, Carbondale Police arrested a man for firing shots in the Arbor District in an area of South Hayes and West College Streets.

In the pre-dawn hours of Monday, officers were patrolling the area when they heard the gunfire, but were unable to pinpoint the location at that time.

Their investigation revealed a silver jeep left the area traveling at a high rate of speed when the shots were fired.

Officers located and stopped the jeep in the 1700 block of West Main Street. They arrested the driver, 29-year-old James Johnson of Carbondale, and charged him with Unlawful Use of Weapon by a Felon and Operation of a Motor Vehicle with Suspended Registration.

No one was injured and there was no property damage reported.
