he Carbondale Police Department has released statistics related to work by its new specialized Strategic Response Unit -- or SRU.

In March of 2025, the Police Department launched the unit to address violent crime — particularly firearms-related offenses — and improve overall quality of life in the City of Carbondale.

Since its inception, the SRU has:

Conducted 180 traffic stops

Made 80 total arrests

Seized 26 firearms

Executed 45 felony arrests

Made 27 arrests related to Unlawful Use of Weapons offenses

Completed 11 felony drug arrests

Served 17 arrest warrants.

City Manager and Chief of Police Stan Reno says the SRU focuses on identifying and disrupting criminal activity through proactive, intelligence-based policing.

The unit also works to address issues that directly impact the safety and quality of life concerns in Carbondale’s neighborhoods and for everyone visiting the community.
